Something extraordinary happened in one of my workshops this week.
A man admitted that he struggles to see other people’s points of view.
By the way – that’s not the extraordinary part - if you thought that was where we’re headed. We’re not in the business of man-bashing here.
No! The really extraordinary thing was how vehemently his colleagues disagreed.
They told him he was, in fact, an exceptional listener. One of the best! One person even admitted they modelled themselves on him.
I watched it land. His posture changed - his shoulders relaxed, he took up more space, almost as if he’d grown an inch taller.
At lunch, he told me he’d been carrying this belief for years. A boss, long ago, had labeled him as too attached to his own ideas. And ever since, he’d been paranoid about it. He hadn’t noticed that, in overcorrecting, he’d become outstanding at exactly the thing he thought he lacked.
He just hadn’t caught up to who he’d become.
Why does this matter?
Gallup studies show that employees who focus on strengths (not weaknesses) become more confident, self-aware, and productive. This, in turn, leads to higher engagement, increased performance, and dramatically lower attrition rates.
There’s a huge difference between leading from confidence and leading from fear.
I often say that leadership isn’t a position or a title, rather it happens ‘in the moment’. But that’s not the full story. How you show up today can shape others for years, and ripple out to everyone they go on to influence.
Leadership is the ultimate time-traveller.
And becoming aware of your own influence boosts it even further.
So here are two questions for you:
What’s a skill you’ve been developing that’s ready to be owned as a superpower?
(And if you’re unsure, ask the people around you. They often see it before you do.)
Now - where can you deploy that superpower for even greater impact?
Boosts for you:
